Things I Like: The Balvenie 12 Year Double Cask - World, Scotch... Scotch, World

Signature, Aged 12 Years

THE BALVENIE
Signature, Aged 12 Years

The Balvenie Signature Aged 12 Years is an exposition of the traditional art of The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart ~ created to celebrate his 45 years in the whisky industry. He skilfully marries aged Balvenie from the finest first fill bourbon, refill and sherry casks to create this signature malt, characterised by honey, spice and subtle oak. A limited release, each batch of The Balvenie Signature is a unique marriage of these three cask types and each bottle carries its own batch number.

Pyrat XO Reserve and Cask 23 Rums

My boy Scotty bought a couple of bottles of this stuff for his Mardi Gras party a few weeks back.  I have to tell you that this is some utterly fantastic rum.  The XO Reserve is what we had and it was so good that we were drinking this stuff straight after a while.  Ok, I was at least.  It went down like a great and very smooth scotch or something.

Discovered on a recent trip to Anguilla (though available everywhere) these blended rums make for some fine sipping. Unlike the sweet garden variety rums (or worse, the new fad of flavored rums) that you add to Coke or other mixers, these rums are made to be enjoyed solo, like fine Tequila or Cognac. Blended, aged and bottled in Anguilla, they're made from a variety of Caribbean rums. The Pyrat XO Reserve is a blend of many 15 year old rums and is an affordable addition to any bar. We found it online for around $50. For the serious connoisseur the Pyrat Cask 23 may be in order. Blended from 40 year old rums and further aged in an oak cask to a remarkable result. It may be the best rum I've tasted. Precious few bottles of this little liquid luxury are made. The pleasure will set you back around $300, and can be ordered online here.
